Quarter 1 Biology Exam Study Guide Flashcards
List all of the characteristics shared by all living things.
Cells, Reproduce, Homeostasis, Grow and Develop, Respond, Evolution, Metabolism, and DNA
Describe homeostasis.
A characteristic of a system that regulates its internal environment and tends to maintain a stable, relatively constant condition of properties.
Put following in order from smalllest to largest;
tissue, organ, organism, cell, organ system
cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism
List the 3 parts of the atom.
Protons, Neutrons, and Electrons
What is the charge of each part of the atom?
Protons (+) Neutrons (neutral) Electrons (-)
Where is each part in relation to the whole atom?
The protons and neutrons are in the middle with the nucleus, and electrons are on the outside floating around the cell.
What is an ionic bond? Example.
When elctrons are moved from one place to another.
Example; table salt
What is an ion?
Atoms with a charge one with more elctrons or one with more protons. Formed by ionic bonds.
What is a covalent bond? Example.
Shares electrons.
Example; water
What are valence electrons?
Involved in forming bonds, outer shell.
What is the octet rule?
Atoms tend to form bonds to equal 8 valence electrons.
Except; hydrogen
What does polar molecule mean?
Partial positive and partial negative charge.
Where do hydrogen bonds form?
water
Properties of Water
Surface Tension, Adhesion, Cohesion, Resist temp. change, pH, ice floats
