Quantum Numbers and Electron Configuration Flashcards
What are the 4 quantum numbers?
- n
- l
- ml
- ms
What is the n (electron shell)?
principal quantum number values (main energy level)
What is the l (subshell)?
orbital shape (ranges from 0 –> n-1)
What is ms?
What can it be between?
the electron spin
ms –> can be either -1/2 or 1/2
What is the ml?
the magnetic quantum number; tilt of orbit (angle)
Pauli Exclusion Principal?
Each orbital can be in one orbital, but they have to have different spins; no 2 electrons can be in an atom
Aufbau Principal
electrons will fill the orbitals in order of increasing value
Hunds Rule?
All electrons in half filled orbitals in the same subshell will have the same spin
Noble Gas Notation/Abbreviation: He

what is l = 0 mean for the orbital
s
what is l = 1 mean for the orbital
p
what is l = 2 mean for the orbital

STUFF YOU HAVE TO KNOW: What is the electron configuration of W (include the Noble notation)? And why is it like this?
Electron Configuration: [Arg] 6s2 4f14 5d4
Why: its a d-block element
true or false: having a completely filled d subshell is more stable along with it being half filled
True
