Quantitative Genetics Flashcards
Quantitative traits are referred to as ?
quantitative traits
HOw are quantitative traits most often measured?
by a numerical value such as yield or plant height
How many genes control a quantitative trait?
more than 2. often unknown or in the hundreds
How are complex genes inherited?
in a mendelian manner. however, influence of individual genes is hard to measure
How do we work with quantitative traits?
Statistics
What can influence quantitative traits other than genetics?
environment
What is the formula for calculating variance?
P = G + E + GE
P?
P = phenotype
G?
G = genetic contribution to the phenotype
E?
E = environmental effects
GE?
interaction between genotype and environment
additive effects?
AA=4, Aa = 2, aa = 0
How much dominant gene action is expected in a population of inbred individuals?
Inbred individuals would be highly heterozygous. Expression of dominant gene action depends on heterozygosity. little to no dominance gene action action in a population of inbreds.
heritabilty?
the degree to which a character is heritable is a function of the relative contribution of the genotype and the environment to the expression of the phenotype of the individual
Broad sense heritability?
calculated using total genetic variance
