Identify which traps the GMAT tends to layout

1
Q
A

The trap is to ignore the fact that x<0 and NOT consider this when inserting a number in the given eq. 5-x=a. So I will have to be careful to first, choose a negative value for x (f.e. x=-2) and then substitute 5-(-2)=a —> 5+2=a and a=b=7

Firts be clear that x<0 and y>0, choose say -1/1.

Trap: to think I. is correct.

One has to know that x/y is negative and that the x is negative despite not seeing a negative sign. Its hidden within the variable because we where told in stem that x<0.

Q

-x2 = ?

A

This expression DOES NOT turn positive! The exponent applies to the x by itself. Do not confuse this expression with (-x)2 which does turn postive.

Percent of something? / Percent more/less than something?

Not the same thing. I want to make sure which of the two I’m dealing with.

In this q.—> Country Y’s population grew by 300% more than Country X’s population and Country X’s population grew by 1,000,000 so Country Y’s population grew by 4,000,000. The trap is to just increase 3,000,000.
