What’s the context of quality street?
-The 1920s and 30s was an era where chocolate was for the wealthy.
-John and Violet Mackintosh opened the first quality street shop in West Yorkshire but it was burnt down in 1909.
-Nestle took over quality street businesses.
-The name of quality street came from a play written by J.M Barrie.
-To keep the price low his idea was to cover the different toffees which chocolate and present them in low-cost yet attractive boxes.
What is the regency era?
-The regency era is defined by the life of the prince regent (George IV).
-The regency is associated with a style of architecture, furniture and design that spams more than a single decade.

What is an ideology?
A view of the way in which we should live- attitudes and beliefs.
What is an anchor?
To force the audience to understand and look at a certain aspect of media product.
What’s branding?
A product name and identity. Can also have a logo.

When one text is shaped, informed by another.
(Media Language) What is the structure of the advert?
-centre alignment of the product- main focus- purchase.
-positioned in his lap- possession- connotations of attracting women.
-text positioned in the bottom third due to importance.
What media language is used in the advert?
-Alliteration- links to the image- ‘dilemma’ of which woman to choose- which sweet? Shows women as commodities/objects.
-Bold typography, purple colour ‘18’ connotations of wealth,brand identity, choice.
-Informed about the sweets.
-Repetition ‘delicious’- Brand identity- quality.
What mise-en-scene is shown in the advert?
-red connotations of love power, passion and quality.
-costume choices-women are dressed in colours like sweets.
-colours- brand identity.
-1950s fashion style- personal identification.
-costume-suit-rich, patriarchal society-breadwinner- 1950s context.
How are women represented in the advert?
Women:
-housewives- chores/housework.
-‘weaker’ sex.
-Delicate or ‘delicious’.
-‘Frail creatures’- protection.
How are men represented in the advert?
Men:
-Breadwinners- main earners.
-Women need to depend on a man.
-Powerful// stronger.
How was race/class represented?
Race/class was represented as higher and wealthier, which shows the lower class people they couldn’t buy it.
What are symbolic codes?
Things such as what representations of gender are being made through the visuals on the advert? Analyse elements of Mise-en-scene - lighting, costume, hair and make up, body language and expressions, locations, props.
What are technical codes?
Things such as what can you comment on in terms of camera shots and angels? What can you say about the framing of the shot?
