Quality management Flashcards
- The work environment is not the controlled
setting of manufacturing plants. - The product is always new in some form
- The details are always changing
- Documents differ in detail and accuracy
- Workmen are of varying skills
- Constructors use different information about
construction techniques
Quality is not a simple goal to achieve
The relationship of TQM and “continuous
improvement:
Quality, customer satisfaction, improved
productivity, and future work are all interrelated
- the characteristic element of an item that can
be evaluated as meeting a standard. - Can relate to the suitability of an installation for
its intended use of meeting the owner’s needs
Quality
are important elements of the
performance of the construction project
•As important as quality
Time and cost
The quality is the product, implemented by a
workforce, of:
- Innovation
- Quality improvement
- Productivity improvement
Should create opportunities for improvement
of:
- Construction methods
- Processes
- Delivery
A successful project has the following elements:
- Installations executed properly, once
- Teamwork among project participants
- Commitment of everyone to accomplish the
task as efficiently as possible - Recognition of the quality of the project
- Ultimately resulting in increased sales
The process of continuous improvement, or the TQM
process, generally is defined by the following broad
steps:
- Make suggestion for areas of improvement
- Break down into parts and provide
measurement tools - Create solutions to the suggestions
- Implement and observe the solutions at work
- Acknowledge the individuals and ward
ingenuity - Incorporate the solutions on a broad scale
To implement the continuous improvement process, management, staff, and individual employees must understand the following blocks:
- Construction work activities made up of smaller
components - Quality defined by client satisfaction
- Elimination of rework and mistakes achieved
by prevention - Quality measured by attaching costs
- Quality improvement pertaining to productivity
- Quality improvement through individual
commitment and teamwork
- Lists the essential points a company must integrate into a system to become “TQM” successful
- Some points don’t pertain to methods used by the construction industry
- The majority can be applied when put into the context of an overall quality strategy
- The management must commit to a process of high-quality work attitudes and business practices
Dr. Deming’s silly points of view that I am forced to study because I am a bitch to the almighty dollar
- Starts with a vision and mission statement
- Our company strives to be a leader in providing the highest level of construction services to our clients. Our mission in providing these services is to satisfy our customers’ needs and demands at all levels of their organization.
Specific continuous improvement program
A quality construction company can be defined by its ________ satisfaction levels
customer and employee
Formal presentation to management of the committee’s suggestions
Important for the planning process
No different than other “selling” presentations
- Quality control responsibilities
- Need to be assigned prior to the start of the project
- Often allocated to superintendents, assistant superintendents, engineers, and field engineers
The Jobsite Quality Control Team
- Avoid duplication of effort
- Assure that every quality aspect is covered
- Provide a clear delineation of responsibilities
- Provide effective guidance on the project to achieve quality work
- Provide documentation of materials, installation, and tests
Primary objective of quality control assignments:
Organization of the ________ before the project starts is essential for comprehensive quality control throughout the project.
quality control effort
Is the commitment of organizations to change traditional relationships due to an increasing adversarial and litigious environment.
Joint problem solving generally produces a quicker, cheaper, and higher-quality solution
Partnering
is a long-term commitment between two or more organizations for the purpose of achieving specific business objectives by maximizing the effectiveness of each participant’s resources.
Partnering defined by the construction institute.
Key elements of Partnering
- Top-to-bottom commitment to the process
- Respect for each person’s work and expertise
- Individual trust in the team as a whole
- Setting mutual project goals and objectives
- Implementation of the agreed-upon process
- Timely information transfers
- Taking responsibility
- Evaluating the process on a continuous basis
Protects the owner, public, architect, and contractors
Both testing and inspection are required by most contracts
The inspection process should be done by independent agencies outside of the process
Avoids vested interest
Two primary building codes used in the US:
International Building Code
International Residential Code
- International Plumbing Code
- International Mechanical Code
- National Electric Code
- NFPA standards
Codes that apply in mechanical, electrical, and life safety areas:
Additional codes and standards are incorporated into local building codes like:
- Energy codes
- Access requirements (ADA standards)
- Zoning ordinances
- Health codes
- Other regulations that protect the environment, safety, and health of the general public.
