The study of the lived experiences of individuals
What is grounded theory?
A specific set of methods used to generate a theory, generate a tentative hypothesis and test this hypothesis
When is qualitative research useful?
When little is known about a subject or problem
When something cannot be measured in a meaningful way using other methods
What sample size is most commonly used for ethnography and grounded theory studies?
30-40 participants
What sample size is commonly used in phenomenology studies?
10 participants
What is the strongest sampling strategy used in Qualitative research?
Purposive sampling
How is the sample size in qualitative research determined?
Data saturation - when no new ideas are emerging
What is convenience sampling?
When subjects are selected due to their proximity and accessibility to the researcher
What is snowball sampling?
When existing participants are asked to identify others with a similar experience to be included in the sample
What is purposive sampling?
Selecting participants who can provide the most information
What is theoretical sampling?
Participants are selected to help the researcher develop and test an emerging theory about the issue being researched
