Qualitative Research Flashcards
What is it?
Words provide data
Interviews, focus groups, open-ended survey questions or existing written test
In-depth insight into people’s perspective, opinion, or experience
Why do qualitative research?
Captures concepts that can’t be captured in numbers
Can complement quantitative research but can also be used alone
Bottom up
Transforms understanding of topic
Reflexive Thematic Analysis
While reflecting on how you construct meaning from the data, you look for themes in it
Reflexivity
Researcher’s knowledge and perspective are integral to how they conduct the analysis
Explicitly identify and describe how one’s own beliefs, values and subjective perceptions shape your analytical process (Oyinloye, 2021)
How own knowledge, experiences, etc. could impact the individual conducting the research
Influence in Quantitative Research
Bias - inclination or prejudice for/against someone or something
Important factors - choosing research questions, designing study, conducting statistical analysis, writing up results
Attempt to be as neutral as possible by pushing back on own experiences
Steps of Qualitative Analysis
- familiarise yourself with the data - initial thoughts while reading the data
- generate initial codes - an element or segment of the raw data that can be assessed in a meaningul way
- search for themes - pattern of meaning in the data, underlying message, active process
- review themes
- define and name themes
- write up the findings
Internal Homogeneity
Does the data within each theme cohere together meaningfully?
