Qualitative methods: mixed methodology Flashcards
What is the purpose of mixed methodology?
Enhances validity and rigour - recently, psychologists have been placing an emphasis on merging the 2 together to give a lived experience supported by numbers
Describe the continuum between Big Q and little q
Pure qualitative is Big Q with small Q at the other end - can either do separate studies and report the results together or do separate studies to create a multiple study at the end as part of the same research project
What is the sequential explanatory method?
Employs 2 different data-collection time points, with equal priority given to both phases but time consuming
What is the sequential transformative method?
2 distinct data-collection phases but not much instruction on how to do it - down to the researcher
What is the concurrent method?
Priority equal but can be given to either approach + helps cross-validation within a single study but results can be biased
What is the concurrent nested strategy?
Priority given to primary data collection approach with less focused on this ‘nested’ approach
Data needs to be transformed during analysis - provides difficulties
What is the concurrent transformative strategy?
Collect both simultaneously + provides advantage for both methods - less time consuming as strategies done together
What’s a strength of the concurrent transformative strategy?
Solve the ‘weaknesses’ that each other method on its own suffers from - could solve issues of generalisability and in-depth rich data for a rounded picture
What did Neves & Baecker (2020) state in the Journal of Mixed Methods research?
Blend of interviews with older adults and psychometric scales - wanted to see how accessible technology was
Studied subjects and then conducted semi-structured interviews after - found accessible technology can help prevent loneliness
How has the media shown mixed methdology?
Pictures and stories of people’s lives affected by hurricanes in combination with the statistics of damage
How do the 2 methods (quantitative and qualitative) work in combination?
Can interpret qualitative results with the quantitative data and vice versa e.g., use quantitative data to understand new ideas/theories
What are exploratory designs?
Includes a community design where the community contributes to frame this research in a larger perspective
How does mixed methodology impact the wider world?
Good to use to understand if an intervention has been useful + establish rules about the social world
What is the common theme across all transformative methodologies?
Qualitative data needs to be transformed into quantitative data so they combine to allow integration during analysis
