Qualitative methods Flashcards
When talking about observation, there is no manipulation of IV or DV?
IV
Naturalistic observation:
takes place in the environment in which the target behavior normally occurs (participant’s workplace)
Controlled (lab) observation:
Takes place in a lab or other, an artificial site to observe.
Participant observation:
researcher becomes part of the group, covert or overt, risk of going native. (overt: an observer enters a classroom) (covert: an observer joins a business)
Non participant observation:
researcher remains outside of the group being studied. (overt: big camera) (covert: hidden camera)
Covert observation:
Participants do not know they are being observed, advantage as they act more naturally. Researcher is deceiving the participant and there is lack of informed consent.
Overt observation:
Participants know they are being observed, don’t have ethical issues. But has observer effect, participants behavior can change.
An interview is a type of X method
qualitative
Interviews can be…
Structured, semi-structured, unstructured, focus group.
Structured interviews:
they follow a question order.
Semi-structured interviews:
do not follow a fix structured, like a checklist. The researcher knows what questions to ask, but if one question suits more than an other he will ask that one.
Unstructured interviews:
mostly participant driven, every question is determined by a previous answer. Researcher must be concentrated to follow the goal of the study. Two participants may have very different responses.
Focus group interviews:
simultaneously done to 6-10 people. The key is to encourage to interact. Additional data is provided as they use own language and agree or disagree with each other.
In focus group interviews, if the researcher sees bad group dynamics, what can he do?
Change questions.
Case studies are…
an in-depth investigation of an individual or group.
