Qualitative and Quantitative data Flashcards
What is quantitative data?
Measuring data in the form of numbers.
What is qualitative data?
Describing, emphasising meanings and experiences.
What are the strengths and weaknesses of quantitative data?
Strengths - objective, reliable, easy to compare, statistics can analyse large groups, short and quick.
Weaknesses - simple, lacks validity.
What are the strengths and weaknesses of qualitative data?
Strengths - holistic, highly valid.
Weaknesses - subjective, unreliable, hard to compare, hard to analyse large groups, lengthy and time consuming.
What are the different ways of analysing quantitative data?
Measures of central tendency
Frequency tables
Bar charts
Measures of dispersion
What are the measures of central tendency when analysing quantitative data?
Mean
Median
Mode
What are the measures of dispersion?
Tells us whether our scores are clustered closely or are widely scattered.
Range
Standard deviation
What is thematic analysis?
Thematic analysis is a qualitative data analysis method that involves reading through a data set, and identifying patterns in meaning across the data to derive themes.
How do you use thematic analysis?
1) Create a set of initial codes that represent the meanings and patterns in the data.
2) Group together all the sections associated with a particular code.
3) Sort the codes into potential themes.
4) Write up the narrative.
