Qualitative and Quantitative analysis Flashcards
Electromagnetic Spectrum
Heated samples of pure elements emit a distinctive pattern of lines
Can be used to predict elements in samples found
How do emission and absorption spectra differ
Emission: shows the light reflected as white lines on a black background
Absorption: shows the light absorbed as black lines on a rainbow-like rectangle
How did Bohr predict elements emit light when heated?
When heated, electrons move from one orbit to another as they absorb energy
When they return to their correct orbit they release the energy in the form of light
Flame tests and Emission Spectra
Heat or electricity is used to excite the electrons of an element and the energy it absorbs is released in the form of light
Solubility Test
Mixing certain aqueous solutions can produce precipitates which can indicate the presence of a certain ion or compound
Infrared Spectroscopy
Atoms vibrate at certain frequencies which can be used to determine what is present in a sample
