Qualitative analysis of organic functional groups Flashcards
Universal indicator paper turns red
Acid - carboxylic acid or phenol
Shaken with bromine water, orange brown turns colourless
C=C present
Shaken with bromine water, orange brown turns colourless. White ppt. formed
Phenol
Warmed with acidified potassium dichromate.
Orange –> Green
Primary/secondary alcohol or aldehyde has been oxidised
Warmed with acidified potassium dichromate.
Stays orange
If alcohol, it is a tertiary alcohol (not oxidised)
Warmed with Tollens reagent. Silver mirror forms.
Aldehyde
Warmed with Tollens reagent. Remains colourless
Ketone
Warmed with silver nitrate solution in ethanol. White, cream or yellow ppt.
Chloroalkane
Bromoalkane
Iodoalkane
Effervescence when sodium carbonate is added. Gas turns limewater cloudy
Carboxylic acid.
Effervescence when magnesium is added. Squeaky pop is heard when lit split is applied to gas.
Carboxylic acid.
Add 2,4 DNPH. Orange ppt. formed
Aldehyde or ketone
Warm with ethanol and a few drobs of concentrated sulfuric acid. Sweet smell
Ester produced, could be carboxylic acid.
