Quadratics Flashcards
a > 0
The parabola curves upward.
a < 0
The parabola curves downward.
Quadratic Relation
ax^2 + bx + x.
Parabola
The shape of the graph of any quadratic relation.
Vertex
The point where the parabola reaches its maximum or minimum value.
Axis of Symmetry
A line that separates a 2-D figure into two identical parts.
Maximum Value
The largest value of Y when a < 0.
Minimum Value
The smallest value of Y when a > 0.
First Difference
This value is found my taking the differences of the Y value in a table ( when the first difference is equal the equation is linear ).
Second Difference
This value is found by taking the differences of the first difference in a table ( when the second difference is equal the equation is quadratic ).
Zero
In a function its a term that makes the quadratic function equal to zero.
Quadratic Equation
A polynomial equation of the second degree.
Factoring Quadratic Equations
A quadratic eqaution in factored form is written as
a( x - r )( x - s ).
Axis of Symmetry with factored form
In the equation a( x - r )( x - s ) the axis of symmetry is
( r + s )/2.
Quadratic Formula
A formula for solving the roots of a quadratic equation in the form of ax^2 + bx + x = 0. It is written as
x = ( -b +- √b^2 - 4ac ) / 2a.
