Quadratics Flashcards
What are all the ways to solve a quadratic equation?
1) . Factor
2) . Perfect Square Trinomial
3) . Quadratic formula
4) . Complete the square
Give an example of a trinomial with a leading coefficient of one.
Any three variable equation starting with 1x-squared
What are the steps to completing the square ?
1). Put it in standard form: ax+bx=c
2). Make the tool box:
b= b/2= (b/2)^2=
3). Add (b/2)^2 to “c”
4). Square root both sides.
This answer will always be (x+b/2)
5). Solve for “x”
What is the quadratic formula?
Opposite B, plus or minus the square root of B squared minus four(a)(c). Then divide that answer by two
How do you solve a trinomial with a leading coefficient not one?
With the “split b” method (what multiplies to get a•c but adds to get b) then factor normally.
What is the standard form for a quadratic equation?
ax+bx+c=Y
What is a conjugate?
The opposite equation.
EX: 4+3i
Conjugate: 3+4i
If the equation asks for the square root of a negative number, then what happens?
The number becomes an imaginary number
How do you add imaginary numbers?
Combine like terms
How do you subtract imaginary numbers?
Subtract like terms
How do you multiply imaginary numbers?
FOIL (First. Outside. Inside. Last.)
How do you divide imaginary numbers?
1) . Multiply the numerator and denominator by the conjugate of the denominator.
2) . Simplify
What shape does a quadratic take on?
A parabola, or a U shape
What does it mean to solve non-linear equation?
Even though both equations aren’t linear, there’s either one, two, or no places where the two equations cross.
What is the discriminate?
B(squared)4(a)(c)
