Quadratic Relations Flashcards
What is a parabola?
The graph of a quadratic relation, which is u-shaped and symmetrical.
What is the vertex?
The point on a parabola where the direction of the curve changes. It is maximum point if the parabola opens downward. It is minimum point if the parabola opens upward. (X,Y)
When is the parabola compressed?
When the number at the front of the equation is less than 1.
When is the parabola stretched?
When the number at the front of the equation is more than 1.
In the equation y= a(x-h)2 + k, what does a mean?
It’s whether or not it’s being stretched or compressed.
In the equation y= a(x-h)2 + k, what does h mean?
It means if it’s going to move right or left.
In the equation y= a(x-h)2 + k, what does k mean?
It means whether it’s moving up or down?
How do you get from vertex form y= a(x-h)2 + k to standard y= ax2+bx+c?
Foil the equation
How do you get from standard form y=ax2+bx+c to factored form y= (x-r)(x-s)?
You factor the equation
How do you get from factored form y= (x-r)(x-s) to standard y= ax2+bx+c?
You foil the equation
How do you get from standard form y= ax2+bx+c to vertex y= a(x-h)2 + k?
You complete the square
What is the axis of symmetry?
A line that divides a figure into two equal parts. (X=__)
What are r and s in this equation, y= a(x-r)(x-s)?
They are the x-intercepts.
