What is meant by having a just culture?
- Allowing all members of the team to speak up when they have a concern.
- Focussing on what and why things went wrong rather than on individuals
- Tolerating mistakes but not willfull negligence
What is meant by accountability? How does it differ to responsibility?
Accountability focusses on the process of reaching an outcome rather than completion of the outcome (responsibility). There is a need to balance accountability with psychological safety.
What are the ways to demonstrate inclusive leadership?
- Seek to understand people rather than to correct people
- Demonstrate vulnerabiltiy yourself
What are the ways in which you can encourage teamwork?
- Respect the diversity of your team?
- Be optimistic about your team’s capability?
- Consider whether you are contributing or dominating (are you allowing other voices?)
- Are you willing to challenge dogma?
- Does your team feel safe with you?
What is meant by psychological safety?
The shared commitment of all memberships of the team and leadership to promote clinical improvement and learn from mistakes in a culture that does not penalise the individual
