A

Suspected meningococcal septicaemia (with a non-blanching petechial AND/OR purpuric rash)

  • KSAR
  • Known anaphylaxis/severe allergic reaction to penicillin or carbapenem based drugs
  • Patiens <1 month

Ceftriaxone - Precautions

A

any allergy to penicillin or carbapenem based drugs - minor isolated rash does not contraindicate the use of ceftriaxone.

Pain or inflammation at the injection site

Ceftriaxone - Adult dose

IM

A

2g (2x 1g IM injections). SDO.
Reconstitute two separate vials each containing 1g of ceftriaxone with 2.4mls of water for injectionin a 3ml vanish point for a final concentration of 1g/3ml

Ceftriaxone - Paediatric

IV INF

A

> 20kgs (approx >4yrs)
50mg/kg, rounded up to the nearest 5kg. Total max dose 2g
Reconstitute 2g of ceftriaxone with 8.8mls of water for injection in a 30ml springfusor syringe for a final concentration of 200mg/ml (2g/10ml). Leave the excess in the vial.

> 20-25kg 1.25g, 6.25ml
25-30kg 1.5g, 7.5ml
30-35kg 1.75g, 8.75ml
35kg 2g, 10ml

Ceftriaxone - Adult dose

IV INF

A

2g over 20min. SDO.
Reconstitute 2g of ceftriaxone with 18.8mls of water for injection in a 30ml springfusor syringe for a final concentration of 2g/20mls

Ceftriaxone - Paediatric

IM

A

50mg/kg, rounded up to the nearest 5kg. Total max dose 1g.
Reconstitute 1g of ceftriaxone with 2.4mls of water for injection in a withdraw required dose using 3ml vanish point. Leave the excess in the vial.

≤5kg 250mg, 0.75ml
>5-10kg 500mg, 1.5ml
>10-15kg 750mg, 2.25ml
>15kg 1g, 3ml
