If carbonate ions are present: Effervescence and carbon dioxide is produced

Add dilute acid and silver nitrate
If iodide ions are present: Yellow ppt forms
Test for nitrate anions
Add sodium hydroxide and aluminum foil
If nitrate ions are present: Ammonia gas is produced

Add dilute acid and barium nitrate

If aluminum ions are present: No yellow ppt forms

- Add sodium hydroxide and warm
If ammonium ions are present: Ammonia gas is produced
Test for calcium cations
- Add sodium hydroxide
If calcium ions are present: White ppt is produced and it is insoluble in excess - Add aqueous ammonia
If calcium ions are present: No ppt forms
Test for copper (II) cations
- Add sodium hydroxide
If copper(II) ions are present: Light blue ppt forms and it is insoluble in excess - Add aqueous ammonia
If copper (II) ions are present: Light blue ppt forms and it is soluble in excess forming a dark blue solution

- Add sodium hydroxide
If iron (II) ions are present: Green ppt forms and it is insoluble in excess - Add aqueous ammonia
