Why does Wesley not put Uncle Frank in public jail?
Embarrassing to the whole Hayden family, and Wesley has a real moral problem with putting his brother in jail
Is putting Uncle Frank in the cellar instead of in public jail the right thing to do?
It gets Uncle Frank off the streets, Wesley doesn’t have to deal with Julian fighting to keep Frank out of jail, it doesn’t put a bad name on the Hayden family, if Frank was put in jail it would give the Hayden family a bad name, as well as forcing Wesley to explain why his brother was in jail, Frank also promised to cooperate more if he didn’t have to go to public jail
Is putting Uncle Frank in the cellar instead of in public jail the
wrong thing to do?
Wesley is breaking his legal obligation as sheriff by not putting a criminal in jail, Frank not being in an official jail puts the town at more risk
Describe Wesley’s basement where Frank is being held
Unfinished, but the laundry room and adjoining root cellar were closed off from the rest of the basement by a heavy wooden door. Room where Uncle Frank is being held: had a wringer washer, an old galvanized sink, a shower, a toilet, and a couple of old dressers. Shelves stocked with glass jars of vegetables, fruits, and jellies saved for upcoming years lined the root cellars
What does Frank start breaking in the cellar at 1:00 am?
Mrs. Hayden’s jars of tomatoes and rutabagas, pickles and plum jelly, applesauce and corn relish.
