Q4 Piston Engine Ignition System Flashcards

1
Q

During Flight your engine loses power and starts to backfire (flames out of the exhaust) indicating the spark timing has failed. What could you do to try and get most of your engine power back?
Select one:

1.Switch off first the left and then the right magneto individually to see if the engine runs correctly on one of them.

2.Switch off both magnetos simultaneously, then switch them back on together to clear the fault.

3.Switch off both magnetos and if the engine runs smoothly leave them both off.

4.Switch off both magnetos and then switch one on to see if it is the supect one or not?

A

1.Switch off first the left and then the right magneto individually to see if the engine runs correctly on one of them.

The capacitor or condenser is fitted to a magneto to;
Select one:

1.Store charge to be used at the appropriate time to replace the current used up in the secondary when the points are closed

2.Bypass the contact breaker in the event of a failure caused by wear

3.Momentarily store charge to prevent a large spark across the points (contact breaker) and reduce pitting(wear) of the points

4.Ensure a large spark across the points enhancing the spark at the plugs

Q

How is the fuel and air in a diesel engine ignited.
Select one:

1.Under normal conditions the fuel ignites as it is injected because of the high compression temperature in the cylinder at the end of compression

2.A separate ignition system is fitted to every alternate cylinder as some cylinders are self igniting.

3.Under normal conditions the fuel ignites as it is injected because of the high compression temperature in the cylinder at the beginning of compression

4.The glow-plugs initiate ignition and remain on for the whole of the flight.

A

1.Under normal conditions the fuel ignites as it is injected because of the high compression temperature in the cylinder at the end of compression

Q

Why do aircraft petrol engines have two magnetos
Select one:

1.It reduces wear compared to if you just had one magneto.

2.It gives redundancy and a more efficient combustion process.

3.There is only one magneto, but it is shared between the two sets of spark plugs

4.It gives redundancy but efficiency of the combustion process is the same.

Q

What is the purpose of the HT cable?
Select one:

1.It connects the spark plug to the distributor and transmits the current from the primary winding.

2.It connects the condensor to the mag switch and prevents, when closed, the magneto working.

3.It connects the spark plug to the distributor and transmits the current from the secondary winding.

4.It connects the Contact Breaker to the distributor and transmits the current from the primary winding.
