Q1a) - Elizabeth Blackadder 'Still Life with Pomegranates' Flashcards

1
Q

Comment on the use of compostition.

A

In the painting ‘Still Life with Pomegranates’, by Blackadder, there is no obvious foreground, middle ground or background. This makes the painting appear flat.

Blackadder has created a scattered and clumsy composition because there is no arrangement of objects. this makes the viewer feel confused.

The black teapot in the bottom of the painting stands out as a focal point as it contrast against the cream area around it.

Q

Comment on the use of texture.

A

This painting has a rough unfinished application of paint which creates a thicker texture whilst looking at the pomegranates. This texture makes it look like seeds inside the fruit bringing the viewer’s attention to the pomegranates.

Q

Comment on the use of subject matter.

A

Blackadder has painted objects such as a kettle and the pomegranates. The artist may have done this to suggest that ‘Still Life with Pomegranates’ is a painting of a morning breakfast.

Blackadder has used darker tones for the kettle. The artist may have done this to make the kettle the focal point of the painting.

Q

Comment on the use of media handling.

A

The artist has applied the oil paint untidily with a brush. This makes it seem like the paint has not been applied carefully and precisely in this artwork. This is almost like the painting has been rushed and emphasises it’s childlike appearance.

Q

Comment on the use of line.

A

In this painting the artist has created soft, nonuniform lines at the bottom left of the painting. This could lead the viewer’s eye up from the bottom of the painting.

The vertical lines across the left of the painting leads your eyes up towards the pomegranates in the middle.

Q

Comment on the use of style.

A

The artist has painted this still life painting in an abstract style. Blackadder may have painted it like this to resemble what a kitchen looks like in her head or a memory from the past.
