[RULE 1] Most compound subjects joined by “AND” are plural, Bert is the best friend of Ernie, make this plural.
Bert and Ernie !are! special friends ( plural verb)
[RULE 1] If the words joined by “and” refer to a single thing or person, the subject is also singular, give an example.

[RULE 2] when the part of a compound subject is preceded by EACH, EVERY, OR MANY A, the subject is singular and requires singular verb,
ex. !Each! letter, memo and report requires careful proofreading
[RULE 3] When the words !THE ONLY ONE! appear before the of-phrase preceding the relative pronoun subject, use a singular verb with the relative pronoun subject. In this case, the !pronoun one! is the !antecedent! of the !relative pronoun!.
Elvis is !the only one! of the messengers !who! knows everyone’s name.
[RULE 3] When the word ONE or the words ONLY ONE appear before the of-phrase preceding the relative pronoun subject, use a plural verb with the relative pronoun subject.

[RULE 5] Some indefinite pronouns such as !all, some! are singular or plural depending on what they’re referring to.
ex. !Some! of the beads are missing.
[RULE 5] Note: On the other hand, there is one indefinite pronoun, none, that can be either singular or plural; it often doesn’t matter whether you use a singular or a plural verb, unless something else in the sentence determines its number
ex. !None! of you are doing the work
[RULE 5] But when something else makes us regard none as meaning not one, we want a singular verb, as in
ex. !None! of the fruits were fresh ( not any )
[RULE 5] NOTE: (In this example, the word THEIR precludes the use of the singular verb.)
ex. None of the student have done their homework
[RULE 5] NOTE: (In this example, the word HIS/HER precludes the use of the plural verb.)
