What is a strawberry naevus? Where do you find them on presentation
A common hemangioma in children which presents as a raised, lumpy area of flesh, 83% of the time on the head and neck
When do strawberry naevus’s present? Do they fade?
Present ~4 weeks post-natal
Fade around 5-9 years
Therefore often left alone!
If you wanted to treat a strawberry naevus, what would you do?
Oral propanolol
Common causes of lip swelling? What should you be worried about?
Common : urticaria/angioedema, insect bites
Uncommon: anaphylaxis, autoimmune diseases (SLE)
Worry about airway compromise!! Antihistamines are your friend
Superficial partial thickness or Superficial Dermal are?
where the dermal and epidermal layers are involved. Blisters and is painful, should resolve in 14 days
Deep dermal burns?
Destruction of dermal vascular thickness. Won’t resolve with wound dressings
Full thickness burns?
Both epidermis and dermis destroyed, no resolving with dressings, looks white and waxy
in what instance would you refer the burn to the burns unit?
- Partial thickness covering over 10% of body
- any full thickness burns
- partial thickness burn to face hands, feet, genitalia and major joints
how would a parotid gland cancer present?
- A lump or swelling on or near your jaw or in your neck or mouth.
- Numbness in part of your face.
- Muscle weakness on one side of your face.
- Persistent pain in the area of a salivary gland.
- Difficulty swallowing.
- Trouble opening your mouth widely
70-80% are benign
Cushings reflex?
Phenomonom which occurs in response to raised ICP in which a triad of increased BP, irregular breathing and bradycardia occurs.
Often after traumatic head injury or epinephrine administration. Death will occur in minutes
Indicators of Rheumatic heart disease?
- Sore or swollen joints - including swelling, tenderness, and hotness over multiple joints. The inflammation ‘moves’ from one joint to another over several days.
- Skin rash
- Heart murmur
- Maori and Pacific descent
- Fever
- Tiredness
- Breathlessness
- Fidgety, jerky movements.
Testicular torsion is caused by______ and what are the signs?
the epididymus and testis twisting round the scrotal sac. Usually occurs around ages 12-18.
Pain is severe, of sudden onset and accompanied with nausea.
Testes high riding, and transverse, also very tender.
Scrotal exploration required immediately.
Prehns Sign?
If you life the testicle and the pain is relieved, it is more indicative of epididymis instead of testicular torsion.
What is peritonitis
inflammation or irritation of the peritoneum, the lining of the abdominal wall and organs.
Common causes of peritonitis
- Intra-abdominal abscess
- Ascites and chronic disease»_space; weakened immune system
- Perforation of organ
- Surgery
