Who carried out research on stages of attachment?
Schaffer and Emerson, 1964
What did Schaffer and Emerson do?
Had 60 babies from Glasgow
Babies and mother were visited from home every month
Mothers were asked what kind of protest the child showed in everyday separations which measured the infants attachment
What did Schaffer and Emerson find?
50% of the babies showed signs of serration anxiety between 25-32 weeks old
By 40 weeks 30% displayed multiple attachments
What is the first stage of attachment?
Stage 1- Asocial stage
Babies behaviour between human and objects are similar
What is the second stage of attachment?
Stage 2- Indiscriminate attachment
From 2-7 months babies displayed more observable social behaviour
Show preference for people rather then objects
What is the third stage of attachment?
Stage 3- Specific attachment
From 7 months babies start to display anxiety t strangers
What is the fourth stage of attachment?
Stage 4- Multiple attachment
They extend their attachment beyond one specific caregiver
What did Lorenz do in his study?
Lorenz observed imprinting
Divided a group of eggs where half hatched with the mother and hand hatched in an incubator where they would see Lorenz as the first moving object
What did Lorenz find out?
The incubator group followed Lorenz everywhere
there is. a critical period where the need to imprint- if this doe snot happen they will not attach themselves to a mother figure
