Q Flashcards

Q

the most common change with sleep physiology and ageing is?

A

*** increased wake time after sleep onset **

Normal sleep consists of 4-6 cycles of NREM sleep alternating with REM sleep every 90-120 minutes

The first two cycles are predominantly NREM

Later stages (early am) are predominantly REM

The overall effect of these changes is that older adults tend to complain of difficulty maintaining sleep, more so that difficulty initiating sleep. Less time is spent asleep at night and there is increased daytime sleepiness

A

The Barthel ADL index is a simple tool for assessing activities of daily living

It is widely used in geriatric assessment settings

Reliability, validity and overall utility are rated as good to excellent

Information is gained from observation, self report or informant report

it is often used to predict the functional outcome after stroke

The modified RANKIN scale measures functional independence used to assess stroke-related handicap and as a global measure of the functional impact of stroke
