How would you check the handbrake for excessive wear?
Handbrake/ parking brake
Place foot on break to secure, pull handbrake fully down & up
Handbrake should feel secure & tight.
How can you check the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey?
Make two simple checks
1.) apply gentle pressure on the steering wheel, while the engine is started.
2.) turn the steering wheel just after moving off
• steering wheel should be light & not heavy
How would you know there is a problem with your anti lock braking system (ABS)?
On dash dashboard the ABS light will flash.
How would you check the headlights & tail lights are working?
Turn on the lights, walk around car & check that lights are on.
How would you check brake lights are working?
Ask someone or check reflection
How would you check horn is working?
Off road - press horn & listen
How would you know fog lights are on & when would you use them?
- you’d know fog lights are switched on when an orange symbol appears on the dash board
- fog lights should be applied when visibility is seriously reduced.
How would you check the breaks are working?
As you move off check the breaks.
Brakes should not feel spongy & slack & car should not pull to one side.
How would you check the tyres to show they have sufficient tread depth & their general condition is safe to use on the road?
Tread depth should be at least 1.6mm
&
A safe tyre should not have any cuts or bulges.

Tyre pressures should be checked using a reliable gauge when tyres are cold.
