What is the point of the first scene literally and in reference to the play?

A

The witches are deciding when they should meet again. In reference to the whole play, it sets the mood for the entire play. It introduces major ideas in the play, such as supernatural influences (witches), Macbeth, and the idea of fair being foul and foul being fair.
