PYC 1512 Flashcards
central nervous system
consists of the brain and spinal cord
peripheral Nervous system
consists of the nerves that enter thee brain and spinal cord. it carries motor messages to parts of the body. cells of the nevous system
somatic nervous system
consists of axons conveying messages from the sense organs to the cns to the muscles.
Automatic Nervous system
controls heart, intestines and other organs. Some in the brain and spinal cord with clusters along thespinal cord
sympathetic nervous system
affects the muscles to enable fight or flight responses, like pupil dilatation, constriction of peripheral arteries, raises blood sugar levels, increases metabolism
Parasympathetic nervous system
controls rest, enjoyment, sleep, eating and sexual activity. secrete saliva and is responsible for digestion in stomach, provides blood flow to genitalia during intercourse
Neurons
The information processing and transmitting element of C and PNS. They receive info from the environment and transmit it to other cells
Glia
support functions for neurons
Dendrites
lined with synaptic receptors which enable them to receive info from othwr neurons
Neucleus
is inside the soma
Mylen sheath
insulatuing material, covers axons
Axon
specialized branches that stem from the cell body and communicate with other cells
A thin fibre that conveys impulses towards other neurons
Motor neuron
with its soma in the spinal cord it recieves excitation throu its dendrites and cinducts impulses thru the body to the muscle
Soma
the main mass of a neuron
contains the nucluis, ribosomas and mitochondria. This is where the neuron metabolism takes place
Afferent vs Efferent axon
Afferent axons brings info to a structure efferent carries them away.
