Q

What two ways did Maracek state that bias could occur in psychology?

A

Alpha bias - assuming differences between culture e.g. likelihood to conform.
Beta bias - assuming that theories, methods and results can be applied to all cultural groups e.g. IQ.

Q

Give a supporting factor for social exchange theory being culturally biased.

A

Moghaddam believes that this theory only applies to Western individuals as well as only short term relationships, showing that the theory is culturally biased.

Q

What is the second factor that ignores cultural bias in psychology?

A

Buss’ study could be seen to be culturally biased.

What kind of bias does Buss’ study show?

A

Q

Give a supporting factor for Buss’ study being culturally biased.

A

Women in the UK and US placed les importance on finances than women from China and indie but these specific differences were ultimately ignored (confirmatory bias)

Q

What is the final factor to talk about for ignoring cultural bias in psychology?

A

The diagnosis of mental disorders itself is culturally bias as the DSM V and ICD 10 are based on what is abnormal from a Western view point and therefore individuals from non Western cultures will be viewed as more deviant as their behaviour differs.

Q

Give an example of how the DSM V and ICD 10 are bias in their diagnosis.

A

Nazroo found that in some African tribes hearing voices is seen as having spiritual connection, whereas in Western culture, that is a symptom of schizophrenia.

Q

Give a counter argument for the diagnosis of mental disorders being biased.

A

Culture bound symptoms are actually included in the DSM V, however, they are just included in a few pages as the back of the manual, making them seem less important.

Q

What is the first way in which psychology uses culturally biased methods?

A

The sampling used in major psychological studies could be seen to be culturally biased as they are conducted on mainly white Western participants and findings are then generalised to a wider population.

Q

Give an example of where sampling methods have been culturally biased in a piece of major research.

A

Asch conducted his research into conformity with white Western participants and his research is largely considered globally in regards to conformity.

Q

Give further support for biased sampling methods.

A

Perrin and Spencer conducted similar research in Britain which showed different results to Asch with much lower levels of conformity. This shows that results can’t be applied even across all Western cultures, never mind other countries.

16
Q

What is the second factor to consider when writing about how methods in psychology are culturally biased.

A

The fact that some research methods are culturally biased such as questionnaires that might not be familiar in all cultures and require a level of education that is not globally available.

17
Q

How can the issue of biased methodology be challenged?

A

Some psychologists will adjust the questionnaire. This is known as an emic approach. An example of this is that in Buss’ research he altered the questionnaire for cultures such as Nigeria and even read the questions aloud when necessary in places such as South Africa.

18
Q

What is the final factor to consider about culturally biased methodology in psychology?

A

The US have a large dominance in research.

19
Q

How does the dominance of the US in research make psychology culturally biased.

A

A lot of drug trials are conducted on American citizens due to the majority of drug companies having their bases there e.g. Pfizer. This means that a large amount of information that we know about drugs and their effects are only applicable to a Western culture.

20
Q

Other than drug companies, how else is research in psychology culturally biased?

A

A lot of researcher’s that have conducted highly important and relevant studies were American researchers. For example, Milgram, Asch or Rosenhan.

21
Q

How can historical cultural bias play a role on cultural bias in psychology?

A

Cultural differences will always change and develop over time even within the same societies. This means that outdated research may not be applicable to modern society even if it was conducted in the same area.

22
Q

Give an example of historical cultural bias in psychology.

A

Asch’s research may no longer apply as it was conducted in the McCarthyism era, known for high conformity rates because of other issues in society at the time.

23
Q

Give a counterargument for historical cultural bias in psychology.

A

Some aspects of psychology have changed and adapted with the time period, for example, in the 1950’s homosexuality was treated as a mental disorder and included in the DSM. However, now it is not.
