Purpose Advantages And Limitations Of Sling Loads Flashcards
Helicopters will move cargo by external sling load when :
Cargo compartment cannot hold the load
Load exceeds the helicopters internal load limitations
Ground crew must load or unload the cargo at one time
Landing zone conditions prevent the AC from touching down
Advantages of sling loads are :
Allows rapid movement of heavy oversized or emergency equipment
Rapid relocation of supplies and equipment
Ability to bypass surface obstacles
Use of multiple flight routes and landing sites to enhance sustainability and security of ground units
Est. Of multiple landing sites to support the manuevering unit requirements
Greater movement flexibility for the ground commander to accomplish the tactical mission
Limitations of sling loads are :
Weight of load is restricted to the AC operating capabilities
Load instability during flight may restrict AC airspeed ir manuevering capabilities
Adverse weather and low vis. May limit sling load ops
Atmospheric conditions (HAT and winds) affect AC lift capabilities
Limited number of AC are available for sling load missions
Landing site surface conditions may restrict AC ops, loose debris dust and snow are safety hazards that also limit pilot vis.
Landing site size must be increased during darkness or during low vis. To allow the pilot more room to maneuver
Allowable cargo load for external loads on a UH60A
8000lbs
Allowable cargo load for external loads on a UH 60 L/M
9000 lbs
Allowable cargo load for external loads on a CH47 D
Fore and aft hooks each 17000lbs
Center hook 26000 lbs
Fore and aft hooks together fuel point tandem 25000lbs
When will the ground crew manually release the cargo hook
Only when the hook malfunctions and will not release by other means
How can the cargo hook be released on the UH60
Pilot or crew chief can release the hook electronically, manual release lever is on the right side of the hook
How can the CH47 release the cargo hook
Pilot or crew chief can release all hooks electronically
Crew can release all hooks manually from inside
Fore and aft hooks have manual release knobs
Center hook has no release lever for the ground crew
What three units are involved in sling load operations
Supported
Aviation
Receiving
Supported units responsibilities
Select prepare and control the PZ
Requistioning equipment needed for the sling load op
Storing inspecting and maintaining all equipment
Provide trained ground crew for rigging and inspecting the load, control AC with ground guides, hook up loads and clear AC for departure
Securing and protecting all sensitive items
Provide load dispositions and instructions to aviation and receiving units
Verify load weight to include the rigging equipment
Aviation unit responsibilities include what;
Establish coordination between supported and receiving units within 24 hrs of the mission
Advise supported unit in load limitations
Advise supported and receiving units in suitability of selected LZ and PZ
Provide assistance in the recovery and return of sling load equipment
Establish safety procedures and an understanding of the duties and responsibilities between the ground and flight crew
Recieving unit responsibilities are
Select, prepare, and control the LZ
Provide a trained ground crew to guide in the AC to drop and re-digging of the load
Coordinates with the supported unit for the control and return of the sling load equipment
Inspects the rigging of the back loads
