Purpose Flashcards
The ultimate purpose of Orwell
Orwell has reconfigured the brutal reality of Post World war II Europe into artistry, arguing that we must resist pollical apathy in order to avoid the destruction of human intricacy within totalitarian regimes.
How does he do this?
Through the first person limited omniscent narration that follows Winstons thoughts. (Reflection of his experiences and compels audiences to critically engage with truth )
Example 1: Dramtiziation of Winston diarising that he would utter a
“a truth that nobody would ever hear”
as a result….. he is able to question ompnipotence government seen through rhetoric of
““For, after all, how do we know that two and two make four?” (A motif of governments fake propaganda)
Emphasised by …. (Example 3)
” I am concious of my own identity…..” (an inderect reference to Descartes ‘therefore I am) and his experience of romantic relationship with julia.
Quote relationships with: julia “the gesture which she
had thrown her clothes [belonged] to an ancient time” ( Shakespeare as a literary motif and metonym for history, language, and culture. Emphasising that that the richness of the human condition can only be restored by actively rejecting the government’s dehumanising )
(Example) Winston was……
“prepared to commit murder” (exten of emtoion / irony lengths will go to to preserve complexity of human condition)
Example in the desolate, epitaphic acceptance of the regime, “he had won the
“victory over himself. He loved Big Brother,” asserting that it is too late for Winston to meaningfully restore humanity’s complete, complex nature.
