Purity and Formulations Flashcards
what is a pure substance?
a single element or compound, not mixed with any other substance
what is a formulation?
-a mixture that has been designed as a useful product
-They are made by mixing components in carefully measured quantities to ensure that the product has the required properties
How can you distinguish a pure substance from the mixture?
-a chemically pure substance will melt and boil at a specific temperature
-impurities in your sample will lower the melting point and increase the melting range of your substance
-impurities in your sample will also increase the boiling point and may result in your sample boiling at a range of temperatures
what are some examples of formulations?
Paints, fuels, pills
How can you test the purity of a sample?
-by measuring its melting or boiling point and comparing it with the melting or boiling point of a pure substance
-the closer your measured value is to the actual melting or boiling point the purer your sample is
why are formulations important to the pharmaceutical industry?
by altering the formulation of a pill chemists can make sure it delivers the drug to the correct part of the body at the right concentration that it it is consumable and has a long enough shelf life
