When was puritanism started?
It was thought to be started in 1530’s, when Hing Henry VIII started the church of England
Why was it started?
It was started because they didn’t like some of the practices and ceremonies from the Roman Catholic Church, and wanted to eliminate practices that aren’t rooted in the bible.
How was their relationship with God?
They felt that they had a covenant, or contract, with God directly.
When did they go to the New World?
They moved to the northern English colonies in 1620s and 1630s
What was their goal?
They wanted to normalize their lifestyle and make it a church reform for the whole nation to follow.
What were their ideals?
While some of them liked the church organization, most wanted a relationship with God between them and him. They also believed it was necessary to have a covenant relationship with god in order to repent.
How did they behave in the New World.
Their order was as strict as the one they left, kind of hypocritical.
How did they move?
They moved as family units, unlike the pilgrims, pilgrims moved as unattached people in general.
Were they literate?
They had a high level of literacy. They also led a devotional life refers here in the first place to a broad range of personal, popular behaviors and beliefs.
When did it decline?
By the 18th century, they started to decline.
How do they consider themselves?
They didn’t consider themselves separatists, as they didn’t consider the Church of England a false church. They also believed themselves to be a chosen people, like the Jews in the Old Testament.
They relied on themselves. Balanced charity with self discipline.
