Why was Sampson sacked?
He would not wear the surplice.
Which two men proposed changes in Parliament?
Walter Strickland and Anthony Cope.
What did Strickland propose?
He wanted to reform the Book of Common Prayer by getting rid of surplices, the ring in marriage and kneeling at communion.
Why did Strickland want to reform the Book of Common Prayer?
He believed these practices to be superstitious.
What level of support did Strickland get?
He received some from the House but lacked it from higher authority. The PC felt that he was infringing on the Queen’s prerogative.
What did Cope propose?
He proposed the ‘bill and book’, which involved completely rethinking the government and practice of the Church.
What level of support did Cope receive?
The bill received support from parliament and was defended by Job Throckmorton, MP. Elizabeth did not like it, and Cope and his associates were sent to the Tower of London.

Who were the Separatists and what did they want?
A branch of Puritans that formed after the failure of Presbyterianism. Puritans who did not want to compromise and argued that the Godly should leave the Church and establish assemblies for ‘saints’ only.

Robert Browne and Robert Harrison, in Norwich in 1580/1.
