Pure Substances and Mixtures Flashcards
What is a pure substance?
A pure substance is a substance that is composed of one type of atom. Or they are not able to be physically separated without losing chemical properties.
What is a mixture?
A mixture is a substance consisting of 2 or more elements that are physically combined, but not chemically.
What are the types of mixtures?
Homogenous Mixtures
Heterogenous Mixtures
What is a homogenous mixture?
A uniform mixture of two or more substances.
What is a heterogenous mixture?
A non-uniform mixture of two or more substances.
What are the physical properties to consider when separating mixtures?
Particle size
Density
Melting and boiling points
Solubility
Magnetism
Electrostatic force of attraction
What are the types of solutions?
Saturated solution
Supersaturated solution
Unsaturated solution
Aqueous solution
Dilute solution
What is a saturated solution?
A solution where a solvent is not capable of dissolving anymore solutes at a given temperature.
What is a supersaturated solution?
A large amount of solutes at a specific temperature where the solvent can dissolve more solute.
What is an unsaturated solution?
A solution in which the solvent is capable of dissolving more solutes at a given temperature.
What is an aqueous solution?
A substance dissolved in water.
What is a dilute?
A relatively small amount of solute dissolved in a solution.
