Pure Substance and Mixtures Flashcards
Heterogeneous mixtures:
All components of the mixture are visible because they do not mix together.
Particles are not chemically joined and are not the same.
Ex: sand and water, vegetable soup, oil and water
Matter is divided into 2 groups. Name them:
- Pure substance (made of only one particle)
2. Mixtures (made of a least 2 types of particles)
Homogenous mixtures:
Components cannot be distinguished from each other, appear as one substance.
Particles are distributed evenly.
Homogenous mixtures are mechanical solutions.
Separate particles are not visible because one dissolves in the other= dissolution
In salt water,
Salt is the solute, get dissolved
Water is the solvent, dissolves other substance
Elements are:
Pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances.
The contain only one atom
Ex, oxygen, iron, mercury
Elements are the building block for all other substances
In much the same way a small number of elements can give rise to enormous number of compounds.
About elements and atoms:
All substances are made of atoms but only about hundred substances contain just one type of atom.
Elements are:
Substance that are made of just one type atom.
These are the simplest substance in the universe.
Compounds are:
Pure substance that contains two or more different elements in a fixed ratio.
They can be identified with a chemical formula
Ex, carbon dioxide (CO2), sodium chloride (NaCL)
