PURE FORMS Flashcards
0
Q
One Length
A
- 0 degree elevation
- A.K.A ‘Line’ or ‘Solid Form’
- All hair is cut on the same level, allowing hair to fall into it’s ‘natural’ position
- One Lengths act as a laser to focus and frame features
1
Q
Name the three Pure Forms techniques
A
1) One Length
2) Graduation
3) Layers
2
Q
Graduation
A
- A gradual build-up of weight. Hair gets longer as you progress up the head
- Short hair @ the perimeter creates a foundation upon which longer hair stacks up and out
- Graduation builds volume and fullness into the haircut
- 1 to 89 degrees
3
Q
Low Graduation
A
- Low Graduation will be found @ or below the occipital
- It will display a strong, visible weight line
- Resembles the silhouette of a mushroom
4
Q
High Graduation
A
- High Graduation has a taller, fuller shape
- High graduation is created from 1 to 89 degrees
- Resembles the shape of a light bulb
- Weight line will be very blended and found above the occipital bone
5
Q
Layers
A
- 3 Types: Convex, Concave and Flat
- Layers reduce weight and bulk
- Layers emphasize the hair’s natural wave pattern and texture
- Layers create movement in hair and soften up sharp angles
- Layers DO NOT create volume
- 90 degrees and higher
6
Q
Convex Layers
A
- Cutting angle follows head shape
- Will reveal and emphasize client’s head shape, for better or worse
- Very soft and fluid look
7
Q
Concave Layers
A
- Create a lot of movement while maintaining length
- Cutting angle DOES NOT follow head shape
8
Q
Flat Layers
A
- Can neutralize a very round or flat head
- Removes width through the sides, while leaving full was round the parietal ridge
- Hands are held flat to the sides of the head
- Used for both men’s and women’s cuts
9
Q
Form is determined by….
A
OVERDIRECTION
10
Q
Technique is determined by….
A
ELEVATION
11
Q
Forms
A
- 3 basic Forms
- Forms allow stylists to create haircuts that maximize hair’s tendency to push in certain directions
- Form is determined by OVERDIRECTION
- As a rule: short hair pushes long
12
Q
Balanced Form
A
- Balanced forms have a classic, even look
- They are able to neutralize imperfections in the profile
- A balanced form will not push the hair to the front or the back
- Balanced haircuts are easiest to identify in one length, but are not always one length
13
Q
Closed Form
A
- Closed forms will be shorter in the back, becoming progressively longer in the front
- Closed forms are able to visually slim faces by pushing the hair towards the face
- These forms are flattering for many face types
- Starting point is in the back
14
Q
As a general rule, sections…
A
- Sections must ALWAYS be small enough to see through to the guideline
- Sections should be appropriate for hair texture and density
- Sections must ALWAYS be very clean
- 60-70% guideline, 30-40% new hair
15
Q
Name the 3 types of sections and what they do..
A
- Horizontal: builds/retains weight (one length)
- Vertical: removes weight (layers)
- Diagonal: weight follows angle of section (graduation)
16
Q
Elevation
A
- The action of lifting the hair away from the head shape when cutting
- Elevation is described in degrees
- How high the hair is held determines which technique is created
17
Q
OVERDIRECTION
A
- The action of directing the hair away from it’s natural fall (from front to back, think ‘moving sidewalk)
- Overdirection determines form
18
Q
Name the 3 types of overdirection
A
- Open: forward overdirection
- Balanced: uses both forward and backward overdirection , or eliminates both completely
- Closed: backwards overdirection ; hair is pulled toward back of head while cutting, finished style pushes toward face
19
Q
Tension
A
- The stress placed on the hair is a major factor in determining the cutting line
- A lot of tension will create a softer line
- No tension will create a clean cutting line
20
Q
Open Form
A
- The open form is shortest in the front, gradually lengthening toward the back
- The flatter and enhance petite and narrow faces by revealing and widening the face
- Open forms will push hair away from the face
- Starting point is in the front
