What is a habitus?
- tastes and preferences about lifestyles and consumption,
- their outlook on life and expectations
What does the middle class have the power to do?
define it habitus as superior and impose it on the education system
What happens as a result of the middle class imposing their habitus on the education system?
- the school puts a higher value on middle class tastes and preferences
- this gives middle class pupils an advantage
- wc culture is regarded as inferior
What do middle class have due to their habitus ?
symbolic capital - status and recognition from the school and are deemed to have worth or value
How does the school see working class habitus?
worthless and tasteless
What does Bourideu think withholding ‘symbolic capital’ is?
symbolic violence
What does symbolic violence do?
- reproduces the class structure
- keeps the lower class in their place
What happens as a result of the differences in habitus’?
there is a clash and WC may experience education as unnatural
