pupillary assesment Flashcards
purpose of pupillary assessment
provides valuable information about the integrity and function of the iris, posterior visual pathway , optic nerve , 3rd and sympathetic nerves of the eye
indication of the pupillary assessment
- preliminary test !
- as some abnormal pupillary reflex abnormalities may be life threatening
Anisocoria
abnormal pupil size .
physiology:
diff in pupil size is same in both bright and dim illumination
pathology:
pupil size diff is diff in bright and dim illumination
Relative afferent pupillary reflect
eye with RAPD will react slower / no reaction to light. this is an afferent deferent this means that RAPD is caused by optic nerve lesion / large retina lesion.
RAPD is asymmetric if not we will count it as RAPD is absence
to look at where the light is shining
