Periods & Question Marks . ?
To indicate the end of a sentence and to end a sentence with a question.
Commas ,
To separate words, phrases, or clauses written in a series.
Semicolons ;
To connect related independent clauses.
Apostrophes ‘
To indicate possession, show omission of letters, or indicate plurals of letters, numbers, and symbols.
Dashes (space hyphen space)
To show a break/interruption in a thought.
Colons :
To introduce a long, direct quote or a second clause that explains the first.
Hyphens -
To form compound nouns and compound adjectives.
Brackets []
To insert clarifying info OR pronoun adjustment in a quote.
Ellipsis …
Indicates omission of words.
Quotation Marks & Underlining/Italics (with titles of creative works)
Use quotation marks to enclose direct quotes and the titles of short works. Use italics for the titles of long works.
Independent clause
A clause that can stand by itself.
Appositive
A noun or pronoun set next to another noun to explain it.
Relative Clause
Allows writer to combine two independent clauses into one sentence.
