- Joins multiple complete sentences. “And” or “but” are optional after a semicolon.
- Super-commas in a series of lengthy items.

A
- Just before a conjunction in compound sentences
- Both sides of transitional words like however, therefore, then, consequently, nevertheless, etc.
- Any other parenthetical statement
- When addressing someone by name
- After “he said” or equivalent before an embedded single sentence quote
