Pumps Flashcards
What are the two pump classifications?
Positive displacement and Dynamic
What two categories fall under Positive Displacement pumps?
Rotary and reciprocating pumps
Name the eight pumps that fall under the rotary pumps category.
Gear Lobe Screw Sliding Vane Progressive Cavity Diaphragm Peristaltic Internal Gear
What are the two sub categories that fall under reciprocating type pumps?
Piston type and Plunger type
Name the four types of piston pumps
simplex
duplex
triplex
quadruplex
Name the two types of plunger piston
Single stage and multi stage.
What is the definition of a pump?
A device to force a gas or liquid to move in a particular direction.
What two categories fall under dynamic pumps?
Regenerative (turbine) and Centrifugal
Name the four types of centrifugal pumps.
Volute
Diffuser
Axial flow
Mixed flow
What is the difference between turbine and centrifugal pumps?
The main difference is that the fluid only travels through a centrifugal impeller once, while in a turbine it takes many trips through the vanes.
What are diffusion pumps?
uses a high speed jet of vapour to direct gas molecules in the pump throat down into the bottom of the pump and out the exhaust
In what industries might you find lobe pumps?
They are used in the pulp and paper industry, chemical, food, pharma and biotech.
What is an advantage of a lobe pump?
They can handle solids, slurries and pastes.
Where might you find a progressive cavity pump also know as eccentric screw pump?
Used for well drilling.
Applications for a screw pump?
Irrigation systems and agricultural machinery for transporting grain and other solids.
