Q

Two classifications of pumps are:

a) Rotary and external gear

b) Reciprocating and plunger

c) Dynamic and Positive Displacement

d) Volute and diffuser

A

c) Dynamic and Positive Displacement

Dynamic Pumps (Kinetic Pumps)
Dynamic pumps operate by imparting velocity (kinetic energy) to the fluid, which is then converted into pressure. These pumps rely on continuous flow and are ideal for applications where large volumes of fluid are being moved at relatively low pressures.

Centrifugal Pumps
Axial Flow Pumps

Positive Displacement Pumps
Positive displacement pumps move a fixed amount of fluid with each cycle. These pumps operate by trapping a set volume of fluid and forcing it through the pump mechanism into the discharge pipe. PD pumps are capable of generating higher pressures than dynamic pumps and are better suited for applications where precise, controlled flow is important.
