pumps Flashcards
What are 5 Hazards of pumping in open water?
- Working in isolation 2. Manual Handling 3. Fatigue 4. Limited visibility 5. Steep slippery banks 6. Trip hazards 7. Equipment falling in 8. Changing water conditions 9. Fire 10. Waterborne diseases 11. Blue algae
What are the 3 gauges on the pump and what are they used for?
Compound gauge - This is used for Hard suction
Low pressure - Deliveries to the hose.
High Pressure - Hose reels
How much pressure would you lose for each length of hose and how much for each meter going up?
0.2 bar per length and 0.1 bar upwards
Explain the process for engaging the PTO on the MAN and the Scania
MAN - Handbreak on, make sure its in neutral, then engine on, Select PTO 1 button in the main cab then open tank valve.
Scania - handbreak, neutral, engine on open tank, Press the button on the bottom right corner of the screen located in the back with the pump, the icon will light up once engaged.
Name 2 advantages of putting water through tank of appliance?
- Always reserve supply of water in the tank 2. Have control of the pressure to the branches
What does CREST stand for? What does it mean?
Pneumonic for the suction. C - Creating the flow R - Resistance E - Entry loss at the pump eye S - Suction and strainers T - Temperature
Name 2 reasons for water loss when working on pressure fed supply?
Burst length - A car could drive over the length.
Name 2 reasons for increase of delivery pressure?
Shutting down branch
Vehicle parked on delivery hose has moved
Kink in delivery hose has been sorted
Name 2 ways of supplying water over long distances
HVP
Water ferrying
Water relay
What is tuberculation?
Corrosion / build up of rust type stuff in pipes.
When should internal strainer be removed from LPP?
When pumping from open water
Why do you flush the hydrant?
To remove stone/debris to prevent damaging the equipment.
What are the types of positive displacement pump?
stirrup pump. Peristaltic
When pumping from open water, the needle goes to zero. What does this indicate?
Couplings may have come loose or the suction has come out the water or water is rising
What type of primer is used in the 12 TON and 18 TON appliance?
Reciprocating primer
