Pump Study Guide Flashcards
Pass the Test
Improper use or poor maintenance can result in what 3 thing?
- Unneccessary property damage
- Injury damage to equipment itself
- Needless loss of life
What fire engine pump is presently used in the NHFD
Centrifugal pump
What are the 2 main parts of a centrifugal pump
- Impellars
2. Volutes
What part of the centrifugal pump rotate very rapidly with the volute and creates centrifugal force which hurls the water from the center outward
Impeller
What part of the centrifugal pump is a spiral shaped section of the body enclosing each impeller, which than carries water from the impeller, which than carries water from the impeller to the discharge?
Volute
What forces water into the suction eye
Atmospheric or other pressures
What do the impellers to with the water
Forces the water outward
What do the volutes do with the water
Conducts the water out
What are the 3 things that can regulate pump discharge pressure
- Adjusting pump speed
- Adjusting discharge valve openings
- Nozzle Size
What is the heart of the centrifugal pump
Impellers
What is the size of the slots in the impellers
1/2 inch wide by 2 inches long
What do centrifugal pumps do with hydrant pressure
It adds to the pressure
What is the function of a positive displacement pump
It provides all the pressure
What does a centrifugal pump need to exceed its rated capacity
a good hydrant
What is the pump of choice for the NHFD
Single stage centrifugal pump
What is the preferred pump capacity of the NHFD
1250 GPM waterous pump mid mounted
What is Engine 16s capacity
1000 GPM waters pump
What is Engine 5s capacity
1500 GPM
What is the output of a single staged pump, both volume and pressure, controlled by?
Engine throttle Setting
What takes the engine out of its road or driving sequence and directs its power to the pump
pump transmission
What are the 7 steps to engage the fire pump on the apparatus
- Stop apparatus
- Set Parking brake
- Reduce Engine to idle speed
- Place road transmission to neutral
- Move pump shift to center (pause) then pump position. Green light should go on
- road transmission into drive
- Chock wheels
What will the speedometer register at when the pump is engaged
5-20mph
How do you use the manual electric pump override for pump gear and road gear
Push rod in for road gear
Pull out for pump
Pull rod out for road gear
How many seconds do you want to wait from setting the manual rod from road gear to engaging the transmission
4 seconds
What is an essential part of the fire pump equipment
Pressure relief valve
What is the basic purpose of the pressure relief valve
To protect FF handling hoselines against undue pressure rises in the line
What can cause serious injuries to nozzle personnel, cause burst hoselines and mechanical damage
Increased discharge pressure due to attack lines shutting down
What type of valve actuates the relief valve to bypass water from discharge to intake of pumps
Adjustable spring loaded pilot valve
What are the 8 steps to setting the pressure relief valve
- Set discharge lines to desired pressures
- Turn pressure relief to on position
- Note engine pressure (main pressure gauge) and engine speed (RPM) 4. Rotate relief valve in counter clockwise until:
- Amber light goes on
- A decrease in pump pressue occurs along with decrease in pump speed 5. Rotate relief valve clockwise until amber light turns green - Pressure relief is set
- If additional lines are added, throttle must be adjusted
- If greater engine pressure is required, the following must be done:
- Rotate relief valve clockwise and increase throttle
Before a centrifugal pump can operate, what must be done?
It must be primed
What is replacing air in the intake lines and portion of pump with water?
Priming
What is an eccentric rotary vane pump
priming device
When drafting, we are making the engine a what type of pump?
positive displacement pump
