pulse ox basics Flashcards
1
Q
where can a pulse ox be placed?
A
any protuberance:
fingers, ears, tongue, nose, toes, lip, penis
2
Q
how does oximetry work?
A
observation that oxygenated and reduced hemoglobin differ in their absorption of red and infrared light. Oxygenated Hb absorbs more more infrared light and deoxygenated Hb absorbs more red light
3
Q
How is a value produced for pusle ox?
A
ratio of absorptions at the red and infrared wavelengths
4
Q
how is a pulse rate detected?
A
plethysmography
5
Q
what are some causes of pulse oximetry artifact?
A
excessive ambient light
motion
low perfusion (low CO, anemia, hypothermia, increased vasc. resist.)
6
Q
normal pulse ox values
A
95-100 %
