WEAK PULSE

53
Q

Deep Pulse

WEAK PULSE

A

Deep, thin, soft

Deficiency: Qi, Blood (yang)

Mechanism: Insufficient Blood to fill vessels, insufficient qi so pulse is weak.

Q

SLOW PULSES

A

Slow Pulse

Moderate Pulse

Choppy Pulse

Knotted Pulse

55
Q

SLOW PULSE

A

LESS THAN FOUR BEATS PER BREATH < 60 BPM

Arrives and Departs very slowly

Indications:

Normal: athletes

Cold patterns:

Slow and Forceful

Slow and Weak

Mechanism: Cold causes stagnation, blood doesn’t move easily. Def of yang qi, too weak to move blood.

56
Q

Slow and Forceful

A

Excess Cold

Cold causes stagnation, blood doesn’t move easily

57
Q

Slow and Weak

A

Deficiency Cold

Def of yang qi, too weak to move blood.

58
Q

Moderate Pulse

A

Four beats per breath comes and goes leisurely.

Slightly faster than slow pulse

59
Q

Moderate and Weak

A

Spleen and Stomach deficiency, often with dampness

leads to qi and blood def, no strength to move pulse.

60
Q

Moderate, not lifting up Much

A

Dampness

Yin pushes pulse down) (Dampness obstructing the vessels and inhibiting movement of qi and blood

61
Q

Moderate, has strength, not floating or deep, regulare rhythem

A

Normal Pulse “Have Stomach qi”

62
Q

Choppy Pulse

A

Slow (in general) rough, uneven

63
Q

Choppy and Weak

A

Damaged essence, weak blood

Deficient blood and essence can’t moisten vessels.

64
Q

Choppy and Strong

A

Stagnation of Qi and Blood

Qi and blood stasis impairs movement of blood in vessels.

65
Q

Knotted Pulse

A

Slow or moderate. Stops irregularly ( irregularly irregular)

Slow and Relaxed with Irregular pauses

Indications:

Excess cold with knotting of qi

Cold Phlegm knotting and stagnation

Stagnation of qi / blood due to cold

(Cold congealing, qi stagnating, plegm knotting, then qi and blood are impaired, vessel qi impaired/stagnant, pulse comes moderately and occasionally stops)

EXCESS COLD IMPAIRS HEART YANG - CAN’T BEAT REGULARLY

66
Q

RAPID PULSES

A

RAPID PULSE

SKIPPING PULSE

67
Q

RAPID PULSE

A

6-7+ BEATS PER BREATH > 90 BPM

Indications:
Heat:

Rapid and Forceful: Excess Heat

Rapid and Weak: Deficiency Heat

68
Q

Rapid and Foreceful

A

Excess Heat

Heat excess quickens qi and blood circulation, pulse is rapid and forceful.

69
Q

Rapid and Wear

A

Deficiency Heat

Deficient yin can’t restrain yang. unrestrained yang quickens pulse, pulse is rapid and weak.

70
Q

KEY WORDS:

RAPID

A

HEAT

71
Q

KEY WORDS:

Weak

A

Deficiency

72
Q

Skipping pulse

A

Rapid with irregular pauses (Irregular Irregular)

“Arrives and departs rapidly, sometimes with a pause in its arrival”

Indications:

Qi and blood stagnation (with heat)

Phlegm / food retention/stagnation

Excess heat

( Stais of qi, blood, phlegm, food transform into heat, yang excess. Can’t harmonize w yin, pulse rapid and out of control, vessel-qi can’t maintain regularity, sometimes stops.)

  • turbid yin can’t go down, backs up into chest. stagnante heat rises up to heart. heart cause sweat - also go into shock.
73
Q

KEY WORDS:

PALPATIONS

A

HEART

74
Q

Deficiency/Vacuity Pulse

A

Combines four forms:

floating, large (slow), soft

Weak in all three positions. Feels soft and empty

Indications:

Deficiency patterns: Qi, Blood, Organs

( Qi weak, no strength to command blood, pulse comes slow and large. Blood weak, can’t fill vessels, so pulse is empty and soft)

Due to Blood loss - qi yang def
Thin weak - blood def

75
Q

KEY WORDS:

SOFT

A

LACKING FORCE

76
Q

KEY WORDS:

EMPTY

Q

Thin and Fine Pulse

A

Feels like a fine thread, but can’t be felt distinctly

Indications:

Deficiency patterns:
Qi, blood, “ Deficiency taxation” (overworkP)

Dampness

( Qi and Blood wear so can’t fill the vessels. Dampness pushing down on vessels)

79
Q

Regularly Intermittent pulse (dai mai)

A

Relatively moderate pulse with stops that occur at regular intervals and (last a relatively long time.)

Regularly Irregular

Indications:

Dai and weak: def of organs (heart qi def)

Dai and strong: Internal wind, pain, trauma (blood stasis)

( def of organs leads to weakness of qi and blood, weakness of vessel qi leads to inability to regulate heart rhythm)

A

long, large, strong and slightly wiry in all three positions and all three depths.

Indications:
Excess and rapid: Excess Heat

Excess and slow: excess cold

(Pathogen is replete (full/excess) and Zheng qi is not deficient, so they fight, causing qi and blood to move in large amount and fill the vessels)
