Pulp Flashcards
What is the origin of pulp?
Inner cells of dental papilla (mesoderm).
What are the four main functions of pulp?
- Support/Maintenance of Coronal Dentin
- Sensory
- Nutritional
- Protective
What two structures are associated with the protective function of pulp?
- Undifferentiated mesenchymal cells
2. Fibroblasts
What are pulp horns?
Occlusal most extent of the pulp.
What is the coronal pulp?
The portion of the tooth shadows the tooth shape.
What is the radicular pulp?
Portion of the pulp that is continuous with periapical tissue and is tubular in shape.
What is the maxillary width of the apical foramen?
.4mm
What is the mandibular width of the apical foramen?
.3mm
Clinically what is the average distance from the apex to the apical foramen?
1mm
What are the four microscopic features of the pulp?
- Fibroblasts
- Odontoblasts
- Undifferentiated mesenchymal cells
- Pulp Stones
What is the function of the fibroblasts?
Protein synthesis; collagen (connective tissue substrate)
What is the function of odontoblasts?
Part of sensory function of pulp.
Where are odontoblasts located?
Resides near dentin.
What are the three types of pulp stones? Where are they?
Free: not attached to pulpal chamber wall
Attached: attached to pulpal chamber wall
Embedded: in dentin, no obstruction of pulp pathways
