Pulmonary Ventilation Flashcards
What is external respiration and what it also called
The exchange of gases between alveoli and the blood in pulmonary capillaries. It is also called pulmonary gas exchange
What is internal respiration and what is it also called
The exchange of gases between blood in systemtic capillaries and tissue cells. It is also called systemic gas exchange.
According to Boyle’s law how does the pressure of gas effect a closed container
Inversely with the volume of the container, that is if the size of the container in increased the pressure of the gas inside the container decreases
What happeneds to the pressure inside the lungs when the volume of the thoracic cavity increases
It will decrease
What is the most important muscle of inhalation
The diaphragm
What is a diaphragm
A dome-shaped skeletal muscle that forms the floor of the thoracic cavity.
What is the second most important muscle of inhalation
The external intercostals
Is it true that during quite inhalation no muscular contractions are involved? Why?
Wrong because their are muscles that help with the elevation of the of the ribs, the diaphragm and external intercostals that expand the ribs to allow the lungs to fill with air
Is it true that during quiet exhalation no muscular contractions are involved? Why?
Yes because it is a passive process that results from elastic recoil of chest walls and lungs both of which have a natural tendency to spring back after they have been stretched
Define respiration
Process of gas exchange in the body
